Antique Teddy Bears
Has anyone ever watched Antique Roadshow? I was watching one day and saw a lady showing off some really raggedy teddy bears. I thought this poor lady had lost her mind; these teddy bears were old and kind of dirty looking... I kind of felt sorry for her. Obviously, I know very little about teddy bears and their history. I had no idea that antique teddy bears from the Steiff Company could be worth a small fortune. I am still in shock by how much those ratty looking bears are worth. I don’t remember the total worth but it was pretty high. These bears in excellent condition might pay for a car and the most bedraggled one could fill up your car at least once.
Most antique teddy bears aren’t worth much except for sentimental value. A little scruffy teddy bear with small tears and patches holds so many memories that are priceless. Just looking at the old teddy bear can bring tears to a mother’s eyes. Teddy bears were meant to be played with and not to be put on a shelf in the original box so that it will be perfect. Teddy bears are meant to be cuddled and played with in and out of the house. They can even get a bath in the washing machine when necessary.
If you do have a very old teddy bear, not a Steiff, and don’t want it any more, you can always sell it at an antique store. Many antique stores take items on consignment. If the teddy bear is in the original box and is at least fifty or more years old, you might get a nice price for it. Some antique dealers will take items on consignment. That way you can set your own price and not sell the teddy bear for less than you want.
If selling the antique teddy bear doesn’t appeal to you, you can always display the teddy bear in a prominent place in your home. If your house is decorated in the country style an antique teddy bear will fit right in your décor. Another idea is to give the teddy bear to the first grandchild. Even if he is too young to play with the teddy bear, it will add a huge touch of cuteness to the room.
Some antique teddy bears are made of real fur. Because so many people today do not approve of animal fur being made into toys or anything else, you might have some resistance to an antique animal fur teddy bear. If no one minds animal fur, then you might be able to sell it or give it away if you don’t want it any more.
Just because you could hit the lottery if you find a Steiff teddy bear doesn’t mean that you will. As the years go by, these lovely bears are becoming rarer. Your only chance would be an estate sale where no one has any sentimental connection to the bear and no idea what a Steiff teddy bear is worth. Actually, antique teddy bears are special just because they were at one time a child’s toy. Whether they are worth a lot of money or not, teddy bears are still great toys.
