Donate Teddy Bears To Hospitals
Children in the hospital often have to leave behind treasured toys or can only bring in a limited number. Donating unwanted teddies to hospitals or even better new Teddy Bears can help keep children occupied and thereby distracting them from their fears as well as making the hospital a less clinical and frightening place. When I was little I had to undergo an operation. At about the same time, my favourite stuffed toy rabbit developed a hole and the stuffing was coming out. A very nice doctor reassured me that he would do everything possible to fix her, and when I work up; there she was with a nice neat row of stitches to match my own! I was delighted.
Having toys in hospital can actually help kids recover faster, reduce stress, anxiety and boredom. Making hospital visits pleasant experiences is beneficial to all but especially for young patients with ongoing treatment. These children who may be in and out of hospital regularly may become depressed and experience great isolation. They are away from their friends and many of their family members. A sweet teddy bear can become a new furry friend. It is also of particular benefit to children who are spending an extended period of time in a hospital to make it as child friendly as possible. Even children who are stuck in a bed and unable to do much will enjoy the addition of a cuddly toy to keep them company.
Unfortunately many hospitals worried about the risks of fabric toys possibly harbouring harmful bacteria and viruses and being hard to clean and disinfect no longer accept them. Lots of hospitals now only accept new toys, which have not previously been used. Other concerns are related to health a safety due to the wide age range often found on children’s wards, all toys should be safe enough for even the youngest child who has access to the little bears. It is best to check with the hospital what their policy is before you donate.
The kindest hearted people want to donate teddy bears to hospitals because they simply want to help children who are going through a crisis. Many churches or civic organizations have teddy bear drives at least once a year. The organization buys bears that the hospital recommends and then acts its members to dress the bears. Then members dress the bears in little boy clothes or little girls clothes. Finding clothes for the teddy bears is quite easy. Most infant or three month old baby clothes will fit quite well. If a member can sew, then the dressed bear wear whatever the seamstress desires. Dressing the bears just makes them so much more special. If money is available, the organization might even purchase pyjamas so the bear can be dressed for sleep just like the child.
One of the greatest gifts we can offer a child who is ill and must stay in the hospital is love. Although we will more than likely never meet the recipient of the teddy bear, we can see in our mind’s eye the bright smile our gift gives the sick child. Just thinking about their delight cannot help but make us smile.
